After three weeks away from competitive action, The People’s Team returns this Saturday in a domestic cup showdown at Kamuzu Stadium, taking on The Boyz FC in the FDH Bank Cup Round of 16.
It’s been a long wait for Peter Mponda’s men, whose last competitive fixture came on 27 August when Bullets claimed a 3-1 away win over Songwe Border United in Karonga in the TNM Super League.
Now, the focus shifts to the domestic cup as we look to continue the second phase of the 2025 season with another strong performance and push to reclaim the FDH Bank Cup—having last won it in 2023.
FORM GUIDE
Bullets head into Saturday’s tie on the back of a three-game winning run. We beat Chitipa United 2-0 and Songwe Border United 3-1 in the league before that, hammering Chilumba Barracks 5-0 to reach the FDH Cup Round of 16.
Our opponents, The Boyz, reached this stage with a 2-1 win over Becks FC. In the league action, they recently beat Ntopwa FC 3-2, but also lost 1-0 to Chilobwe United and 3-2 to Ekhaya FC, before drawing 2-2 with Mighty Wanderers Reserves.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
This will be the first-ever meeting between Mponda’s side and The Boyz FC in any competition. The Boyz, also known as Ana Kamodzi, compete in the ThumbsUp Southern Region Football League, where they currently sit seventh with 19 points from 15 games.
COACH’S THOUGHTS
Speaking ahead of the game, First Assistant Coach Gilbert Chirwa emphasised the need to approach the fixture with full seriousness:
“We take this game seriously. We know a cup game is a cup game. There is nothing like a small team in such competitions, and while we may not know much about them, we can’t afford to underrate any opponent.”
“We want to give our fans something to cheer after what happened during the Karonga game. That behaviour was uncalled for, and we want to shift the narrative back to winning on the pitch and uniting behind the team.”
TEAM NEWS
Yankho Singo rejoined training this week after recovering from illness picked up during national team duty. Chrispin Mapemba remains sidelined with a long-term injury. All other players are available for selection.
