Match Preview: Bullets vs Kamuzu Barracks

Share

The year 2021 has kicked off with humdinger clashes in the TNM Super League and this is what is expected of Nyasa Big Bullets’ encounter at home against Kamuzu Barracks on Sunday afternoon.

In their title defence, The People’s Team are in an unfamiliar position in the standings with just eight points from five games while the Lilongwe-based military side is 12th with six points from six games.

After a sluggish start to the season, Bullets have begun to convert pressure into goals and a win on Sunday could see them into the top six.

The defending champions are coming from a 5-1 victory over Moyale Barracks a fortnight ago, while their opponents, who dropped points at home after a 2-2 draw against Ntopwa FC last week, suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Red Lions on Saturday afternoon.

Coach Kalisto Pasuwa has, however, warned his charges to anticipate a tough encounter against KB, a side Bullets defeated 2-0 in the second round of the 2019 season at the same venue, before a 0-1 victory away in Lilongwe in a pre-season friendly.

“When we were going towards the end of last season, all the teams were very fit and aggressive and they matched us in all departments. We need to do more because it’s not a matter of stepping into the field of play and say we are playing Kamuzu Barracks at our home ground without a fight.

“We need to do everything for us to have the results in our favor.  It’s the approach that we take when we start off the game. The first 15 to 20 minutes are very key to us and remember last time when we played Red Lions [in a league encounter last month], we scored early but we were disrupted by the rains and we ended up making mistakes [that made led us to conceding three goals in the first half before equalizing for the game to end 3-all,” Pasuwa told Bullets media ahead of the match.

The People’s Team will be without several players due to a Covid-19 outbreak at the club as well as injuries.

Bullets top scorer Hassan Kajoke and Luke Chima are back into the squad after recovering from Covid-19, but Mike Mkwate, Henry Kabichi, Dalitso Sailesi, McFallen Mgwira, Nelson Kangunje, Stanley Billiat, Ernest Kakhobwe and Richard Chimbamba are still out, awaiting another round of testing.

On the latest injury list Bullets have Ben Manyozo and Precious Phiri, and the good news is that Chimango Kayira, who has been on the sidelines for the first five games in this campaign, has recovered and is available for selection come Sunday.

Sunday’s match will be played behind closed doors following Malawi Government’s decision to maintain restrictions on public gathering to just 100 people due to the upsurge in Covid-19 cases. This will be the first time Bullets will be playing in an empty stadium in a competitive match since the establishment of the club in 1967.
