Wedson Nyirenda wants FCB Nyasa Big Bullets to become more clinical in front of goal despite Sunday’s 2-1 FDH Bank Premiership victory over Kamuzu Barracks.
The Bullets head coach was pleased with his side’s performance at Civo Stadium but felt The People’s Team should have put the contest to bed long before the final whistle.
The People’s Team controlled large periods of the encounter and created a host of opportunities, particularly in a dominant first-half display that yielded Ephraim Kondowe’s eighth-minute opener.
Although Kamuzu Barracks fought back to level through Olson Kanjira after the break, Hope Namadzunda’s late own goal proved decisive as The People’s Team claimed maximum points and handed Nyirenda his first league victory as Bullets head coach.
Speaking after the match, the coach pointed to his side’s finishing as an area requiring improvement despite collecting all three points.
“We need to work on our finishing. Kamuzu Barracks didn’t have much to offer in the first half. We created a lot of chances but failed to take them and when you don’t take your chances in football, you always leave yourself exposed.
“The game should have been finished in the first half. We could have scored five or six goals, but because we didn’t take our chances, they came back strongly in the second half.
“It is one thing to have strikers and another thing to have finishers. That’s an area we need to improve.”
Praise For Young Guns
Despite his call for greater cutting edge in front of goal, Nyirenda was full of praise for the club’s emerging young talents, who once again played an important role in the victory.
Player of the Match Yamikani Mologeni delivered another assured display, while Misheck Billiat and Clever Kalambo also impressed against an experienced Kamuzu Barracks side.
The Bullets boss believes the performances of the youngsters are further evidence of a bright future within the squad.
“We have a big team coming up. I’m so impressed with Mologeni. He’s a big machine in a small body. Misheck is also a very good player.
“These young boys are standing on their feet on a big stage and that is very encouraging for us.”
The victory extended Bullets’ unbeaten start to the season and lifted The People’s Team to fourth place in the FDH Bank Premiership standings on 13 points after Matchweek 7.
Nyirenda’s men will now turn their attention to Saturday’s home fixture against Masters FC at Mpira Stadium.
