Bullets Women out of Goshen National Championship

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Women are out of the Goshen FAM Women’s National Championship after suffering a 4-1 loss to MDF Lioness in the quarterfinals at the Bingu National Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

It was a heavy defeat for our women’s team in years as Maggie Chombo’s aim to reach the last four and reclaim the national championship ended with an early exit.

John Kaputa’s side led 1-0 at the break through Fazila Chembekezo’s opener, before Ruth Tambala and Laita Magombo, who scored a brace, did the damage in the final period. Sharon Dzimawu was on target for our consolation goal.

Match Highlights

MDF Lioness opened the scoring in the 27th minute through Chiyembekeza, before Carthy Kachala set up Tambala to double their lead five minutes after the hour mark.

Sharon Dzimawu gave us hope as he brought us back into the game with a 72nd-minute strike to make it at 2-1.

But Tambala registered her name on the scoresheet to increase Lioness’ lead at 84 minutes before she hit the last nail two minutes later, and at the end of regulation time plus four minutes of stoppages, our ladies succumbed to a 4-1 defeat.

Coach Maggie’s reaction after the match

“It’s sad that we have lost, not the result we were looking for. Most of the girls are young and not used to playing in big tournaments like this and I could tell they were terrified. We were playing a very experienced side with players that I even played with during my playing career. But we will draw lessons from this, build the girls’ confidence as we go back to prepare for the coming matches.”

Looking ahead

Following our early exit from the Goshen FAM Women’s National Championship at the hands of MDF Lioness in the quarterfinals, Bullets Women return to Blantyre and switch focus on their preparations for the 2024 FAM Women’s Football Southern Region League.
