Airtel Top 8 final to be played at Kamuzu Stadium

Share

The Football Association of Malawi has confirmed that our Airtel Top 8 Cup final against Mafco FC on Saturday will be played at the Kamuzu Stadium.

This match will mark the end of the 2023 football calendar, which was extended to 2024.

Initially, the game was expected to be played at the Bingu National Stadium.

Bullets fans in Blantyre now have the opportunity to watch The People’s Team play in a cup final at home for the first time since October 2022 when we defeated our reserves 3-1 in the FDH Bank Cup final.

During this campaign, Kalisto Pasuwa’s men won the FDH Bank Cup and Castel Challenge Cup at the Bingu National Stadium in a space of three months.

It will be the second time that the oldest football stadium in Malawi will host the Airtel Top 8 final since its introduction seven years ago.

The first Airtel Top 8 final at Kamuzu Stadium was played in 2021 when Bullets condemned Silver Strikers to a 5-3 penalty shootout victory as Pasuwa’s men won the trophy for the first time.

Bullets reached the last 2 of the competition following a 3-2 triumph over Blue Eagles in Lilongwe in November.

Our opponents, who beat Silver Strikers 3-1 on post-match penalties at the BNS last Tuesday to secure a place in the Airtel Top 8 final, will be appearing in a cup final at Kamuzu Stadium for the second time in almost a decade. They lost 1-0 to Mighty Mukuru Wanderers in the last match of the 2013 Presidential Cup.

Pasuwa’s men, who beat Silver Strikers in Lilongwe to win the Castel Challenge Cup on Saturday, are hoping to clinch a quadruple this term after we also won the FDH Bank Cup and the TNM Super League.
