Starting XI: Chirwa names Bullets squad for Ndirande clash

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets return to Kamuzu Stadium this afternoon aiming to secure a place in the Castel Challenge Cup quarterfinals.

Interim head coach Gilbert Chirwa has confirmed his squad for the Round of 16 tie against Ndirande Stars, keeping faith with most of the winning lineup while making one key change.

After a commanding 3-0 win over Songwe Border United last week, the team heads into today’s knockout tie with confidence. Last week’s hat-trick hero Maxwell Phodo continues his fine form, and the squad looks to maintain momentum as it targets another cup victory.

In goal, Innocent Nyasulu continues between the sticks, providing experience and stability at the back. The defensive line features Yamikani Mologeni, Edward Thengo, Khumbo Banda, and Dominic Musonda, tasked with keeping the second-tier National Division League side at bay and launching attacks from the back.

Midfield will be marshalled by captain Frank Willard, whose leadership and composure are crucial in controlling the game. He is flanked by Chawanangwa Gumbo and Wongani Lungu, both expected to drive play, break up opposition attacks, and link the defense with the forwards.

On the flanks, Sean McBrams replaces the injured Peter Banda, bringing pace and width alongside Phodo. Ephraim Kondowe leads the attack, spearheading the line and looking to convert opportunities created by the midfield and wingers.

Chirwa has named eight substitutes, ensuring the squad has options despite injuries to key players. Austin Chirambo steps in for Richard Chimbamba as backup goalkeeper, while defender Blessings Mpokera returns from injury to provide reinforcement if needed.

Other bench options include Henry Chiwaya, Blessings Joseph, Yankho Singo, Paul Master, Mike Mkwate, and experienced forward Bright Munthali, ready to make an impact in the latter stages. This depth gives The People’s Team the flexibility to adapt tactically as the game unfolds.

During his pre-match press conference ahead of the clash, Chirwa stressed the importance of starting the match strongly and adapting to the unique challenges of knockout football.

“We’ve prepared for different scenarios in training, and the boys are ready to execute the plan,” he said. “We can’t predict everything on the day, but we are ready to adapt and get the job done.”

Bullets last met Ndirande Stars in the FDH Bank Cup in 2023, recording a comfortable 4-0 victory at Kamuzu Stadium. Fans are expected to turn out in numbers today to support the team as it aims to maintain its strong record in knockout competitions.

Supporters can catch all the action at Kamuzu Stadium or follow updates via the club’s social media channels as Bullets look to progress to the Castel Cup Last 8.
