Team news: Chirwa gives squad update ahead of Hammers finale

Interim Head Coach Gilbert Chirwa has spoken to club media in his first interview since taking charge.

He assumed the role following the departure of Peter Mponda on Sunday and addressed preparations ahead of Saturday’s final TNM Super League fixture of the 2025 season against Mzuzu City Hammers at Kamuzu Stadium.

Chirwa confirmed key absentees for the season finale: Mike Mkwate, Aaron Chilipa, Blessings Mpokera, and Chrispin Mapemba remain sidelined through injury, while defender Yankho Singo is unavailable due to suspension.

Positive news comes in the return of Babatunde Adepoju, back from suspension after missing last weekend’s 0-0 draw with Mighty Tigers.

With one game remaining, the race for second place is finely poised. Silver Strikers moved level with Bullets on 63 points following a midweek win over Mzuzu City Hammers, making Saturday’s fixture decisive in determining the league’s runners-up.

Bullets, meanwhile, have missed out on the TNM Super League title for a second consecutive season. Rivals Mighty Wanderers were confirmed as champions after last Saturday’s emphatic 6-0 win over Moyale Barracks, which opened a five-point gap at the top. On the same day, Bullets were held to a goalless draw by Mighty Tigers, leaving The People’s Team on 63 points.

Mzuzu City Hammers arrive in Blantyre under significant pressure as they continue their fight for survival. Their situation has been worsened by Wednesday’s defeat to Silver Strikers, leaving their safety in serious doubt heading into the final round of fixtures.

Hammers currently sit on 28 points from 29 matches with a goal difference of -19, three points adrift of 13th-placed Dedza Dynamos, who have 31 points and a goal difference of -9. With only one game remaining, any slip-up could confirm relegation, adding extra edge to Saturday’s encounter.

Saturday’s showdown at Kamuzu Stadium will close out the 2025 TNM Super League season for The People’s Team, with crucial stakes for both their league standing and the Hammers’ survival.
