Nyasa Big Bullets fullback Gomezgani Chirwa has been nominated for the 2022 Airtel Top 8 Cup Player of the Tournament Award.

Chirwa has been nominated alongside the cup winners, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers’ duo of Chiukepo Msowoya and Miracle Gabeya.

The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) announced Tuesday afternoon that the Competitions Technical Study group came up with the nominations after analysing the 2022 Airtel Top 8 statistics.

FAM, who are the administrators of the competition, sponsored by Airtel Malawi, revealed that a selected group of coaches under the National Coaches Association, who were responsible for selecting Player of the Match during the campaign, and a selected group of football journalists will vote for the award.

Chirwa, voted Bullets’ Player of the Season during the club’s end-of-season awards at the end of the 2022 campaign in December, was featured in all three  Airtel Top 8 games The People’s Team played.

He scored a stunner, which could probably be the Goal of the Tournament during our 3-1 semi-final win over Silver Strikers at Kamuzu Stadium.

Moving from his line of defense into the offensive zone, he was also a key player to initiate attacks for Bullets as they recorded a historic 7-0 quarterfinal first-leg win over Karonga United.

Bullets could not defend the cup they won in 2021 after going down to rivals Wanderers in the Airtel Top 8 final through post-match penalties at the Bingu National Stadium.

The 2022 Airtel Top 8 Player of the Tournament winner will be crowned at a special ceremony to be hosted by Airtel Malawi in February.
