Weekend Round-Up: Bullets face mixed results as league heats up

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets wrapped up a demanding weekend across all tiers, with the First Team, Reserves and Under-19s all in action, while the Women’s Team followed proceedings from the sidelines as several of their players represented Malawi at international level.

First Team: Three Points from Final Central Region Trip

The senior side completed their final Central Region assignments of the TNM Super League with mixed outcomes.

On Thursday, Bullets earned an important 2-0 victory over Kamuzu Barracks at Civo Stadium, a result that boosted their momentum in the title chase. The weekend, however, ended in disappointment as they lost 2-0 to Creck Sporting Club at Aubrey Dimba Stadium on Sunday, returning to Blantyre with three points from the two away fixtures.

Despite the defeat, Bullets remain top of the league on 56 points from 25 matches. They are level with Mighty Wanderers, who have played one game fewer and were held to a 0-0 stalemate by Chitipa United on Sunday. Bullets maintain the advantage through a superior goal difference.

Silver Strikers stay third with 47 points after a narrow 1-0 win over Civo Service United and still have two matches in hand. Karonga United remain fourth on 40 points following a 1-0 loss to Ekhaya FC, who strengthened their fifth-place standing.

Reserves: Back to Winning Ways After Prolonged Draw Run

Bullets Reserves endured another frustrating outing on Thursday when they drew 1-1 with Ntopwa FC at Kamuzu Stadium, stretching their run to four consecutive draws.

But the second fixture brought relief. On Sunday, the young Bullets dominated Zingwangwa United 3-0 at Mpira Stadium, securing their first win after the sequence of stalemates.

The result lifts the Reserves to third position on 46 points from 26 games. They are level with Ekhaya Reserves, who have a superior fixture count (24 played) and meet Mwanza Stars on Wednesday. Chilobwe United lead the standings with 49 points from 24 matches, while Wanderers Reserves sit second with 47 ahead of their crucial Thursday meeting with the log leaders. Thondwe FC complete the top five after beating Nsanje United 4-2.

Under-19: Four-Match Winning Run Stopped by Griffin Stars

Bullets Under-19s suffered their first defeat of the second round after falling 2-1 away to Griffin Stars on Saturday morning. The loss ends their four-match unbeaten streak, though the young Maule remain second on the log with 40 points from 20 games.

Wanderers Youth extended their lead at the summit to five points after defeating Soche Madrid 2-0. Madrid remain third, tied on 40 points with Bullets but trailing on goal difference. Ekhaya Youth also remain in close pursuit on 37 points following a commanding 4-0 win over Ntutha Academy.

Women’s Team: Focus on International Duty

There was no domestic action for Bullets Women, as three players were on national duty with the Malawi Women’s National Team at the Three Nations Tournament in Lilongwe, featuring Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Malawi lost their opening match 2-1 to Zimbabwe on Friday, with goalkeeper Thokozani Mwase in the starting lineup. On Sunday, the Scorchers drew 1-1 with Zambia, this time with defender Bernadetta Mkandawire featuring, while Mwase and midfielder Lyna James were unused substitutes.

The mini-tournament concludes on Tuesday as Malawi completes its participation with one point collected from two matches.
