FCB Nyasa Big Bullets assistant coach Gilbert Chirwa takes over as interim head coach from Peter Mponda

Weekend Round-Up: Title dreams fade, but Bullets show strength

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets experienced a weekend of mixed fortunes, with the First Team’s title hopes slipping away after a goalless draw against relegation-threatened Mighty Tigers.

Despite the senior side missing out on silverware, the weekend highlighted the resilience, depth, and promise of the Club, as the Reserves and Women’s teams delivered strong performances. The Under-19 fixture against Extending Hope was postponed due to heavy rain at Mpira Stadium, but Bullets remain well-placed in the table and ready for their crucial upcoming clash.

First Team: Title Out of Reach, Pride Remains

The senior side’s hopes of clinching the 2025 TNM Super League title officially ended following a 0-0 draw with Mighty Tigers at Mpira Stadium on Saturday.

Peter Mponda’s men controlled large spells of the match but could not find the breakthrough, leaving Bullets second on the log with 63 points from 29 matches.

Meanwhile, Mighty Wanderers were crowned champions after a resounding 6-0 win over Moyale Barracks, moving to 68 points.

Silver Strikers remain third on 60 points from 28 games, with a midweek fixture against Mzuzu City Hammers still pending, and Blue Eagles complete the top four on 44 points.

Bullets now focus on rounding off the season positively with a home clash against Mzuzu City Hammers on Saturday at Kamuzu Stadium, offering fans a chance to celebrate the team’s resilience and fighting spirit.

Coaching Update: Gilbert Chirwa Takes Interim Reins

In a strategic change, the Club announced parting ways with head coach Peter Mponda on Sunday, with vice-coach Gilbert Chirwa stepping in as interim head coach for the remainder of the 2025 season, which wraps up in February with the Castel Challenge Cup.

Reserves: Goals Galore at Kamuzu Stadium

It was a perfect weekend for the Bullets Reserves, who lit up Kamuzu Stadium with two emphatic home wins.

Heston Munthali’s boys brushed aside Immigration FC 4-1 on Thursday before demolishing Chilomoni FC 8-0 on Monday.

The six-point haul lifted Bullets to third place in the SRFA ThumbsUp League with 55 points from 29 matches, keeping them firmly in contention among the league’s top teams.

Chilobwe United, already promoted to the NBS National Division League, remain top with 59 points, Ekhaya Reserves are second on 57 points, and Wanderers Reserves sit fourth on 54 points.

Bullets Reserves will conclude their season with a high-profile clash against Wanderers Reserves, a fixture promising intensity as the team aims to finish strongly.

Women: Sweet Revenge at Home

The Bullets Women delivered a standout performance, coming from behind to claim a 2-1 victory over second-placed Ascent Soccer Academy on Saturday at Mpira Stadium.

It was a sweet moment of revenge, following a 3-1 defeat in Lilongwe during the first round. Mary Chavinda, sidelined in that first encounter, made a triumphant return, scoring a brace from the bench to turn the game in Bullets’ favour.

The win lifted Bullets Women to third place with 25 points from 14 games, consolidating their status as one of the league’s most competitive sides.

At the top, Silver Strikers Ladies remain leaders with 39 points, Ascent Academy are second on 29 points, and Kukoma Ntopwa Women hold fourth with 24 points.

Under-19: Poised for Title Showdown

The Bullets Under-19 side did not play after their scheduled fixture against Extending Hope was postponed due to heavy rain at Mpira Stadium.

Yamikani Fodya’s boys remain second in the BDYFL with 46 points from 22 games, keeping them firmly in contention for the title.

Wanderers Youth lead the standings with 54 points, followed by Ekhaya Youth on 44 points, while Manchester Motor Spares occupy fourth with 40 points.

Next weekend, Bullets U19 face league leaders Wanderers Youth, a crucial match that could define the title race.
