FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Women will make history this Saturday, 26 July 2025, as they take part in the inaugural NBM Women’s Premiership—the first-ever national women’s football league in Malawi.
The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) will officially launch the competition at Mpira Stadium in Chiwembe, Blantyre, where Bullets Women are set to face their fierce city rivals, Kukoma Ntopwa Women, in the opening match.
This groundbreaking league, sponsored by the National Bank of Malawi, marks the first time the country will have a fully structured national women’s football league. It promises to elevate the women’s game, provide a platform for talent development, and inspire a new generation of female footballers.
Head-to-Head: Bullets vs Ntopwa
Clashes between Bullets Women and Ntopwa Women have always delivered entertainment and goals, with both sides boasting some of the finest talents in Malawian women’s football.
In 2022, the two teams played out a 1-1 draw in the FAM National Championship group opener, but Bullets went on to dominate the league with convincing 3-0 and 4-0 victories.
The rivalry grew even fiercer in 2023, with Ntopwa claiming a 3-2 win in the first league clash before Bullets struck back with a 1-0 victory in the return leg.
In 2024, Bullets secured a 4-0 win in the first meeting but were held to a goalless draw later that season. However, Ntopwa had the final say, knocking Bullets out of the Goshen National Championship quarterfinals with a 2-1 victory.
With this competitive history, Saturday’s encounter is expected to be a high-stakes battle as both teams aim to start the new era on a winning note.
Coach’s Thoughts
Bullets Women’s head coach, Maggie Chombo, expressed her excitement and confidence ahead of the match, highlighting the significance of the league’s launch. She noted that the sponsorship by the National Bank of Malawi is a historic moment for women’s football in the country, which has previously relied on regional leagues and tournaments.
“First and foremost, we would like to thank the National Bank of Malawi for sponsoring the National Women’s League. This marks the first time in the history of Malawian women’s football that we are having a national league. Previously, we only had regional leagues and a national championship. This development shows that women’s football in Malawi is growing and reaching new heights. It will also help expose many talented girls who previously did not have the platform to showcase their skills.”
The coach revealed that preparations for the season began a month ago, with the team working tirelessly to ensure they are ready for this big moment.
“We are fully prepared for our opening match against Ntopwa. Our preparations began a month ago, and the girls understand the importance of this match and the need to collect all three points. This is a league format, not a knockout tournament, so every game matters. As a coach, I believe I have done my part by training them thoroughly, and now it is their time to show what they have learned. We know Ntopwa will come strong, but I am satisfied with the way my players have trained and their readiness for the match.”
Looking at the league’s structure—with three teams from the South, four from the Central Region, and three from the North—Chombo pointed out that every fixture will be highly competitive, and Bullets’ target is to collect as many points as possible in the first round.
“In a league, the most important thing is to collect points. Looking at the structure of this league, it is clear that points will be highly contested. Our target is to collect as many points as possible in the first round. We aim to approach every game as crucial, ensuring that we do not drop unnecessary points.”
The coach confirmed that the team has a full squad available for the match, except for goalkeeper Martha Banda, who is sidelined due to illness.
Captain’s Words
Team captain Sharon Dzimau echoed her coach’s sentiments, calling the launch of the NBM Women’s Premiership a proud moment for Malawian football. She emphasized that the team is proud to be part of the country’s football history and motivated to set the tone for the season.
“This is a proud moment for us as players because we are part of history. Playing in the first-ever women’s national league in Malawi means a lot to us and to the next generation of girls who dream of playing football. Our match against Ntopwa will not be easy, but we are determined to fight for three points and set the tone for the season. We know how important it is to start well in a league, and as a team, we are united and motivated to deliver for the club and our supporters.”
