FCB Nyasa Big Bullets interim head coach Gilbert Chirwa has praised his players for their discipline and execution following a 3-0 win over Songwe Border United at Karonga Stadium, which booked Maule a place in the Castel Challenge Cup Round of 16.
Chirwa highlighted that early control, compact defending, and sticking to the game plan were key in securing the win.
“We wanted to start well, take control early and manage the game properly,” Chirwa said. “Once we scored, the players kept their shape, moved the ball with confidence, and limited Songwe’s opportunities.”
The interim head coach also pointed to the team’s organisation in defence and midfield as a major factor in keeping the hosts at bay.
“Our defensive line stayed compact and dealt well with crosses, while the midfield worked hard to close spaces and disrupt their build-up. The boys executed the plan perfectly,” he added.
While Bullets created multiple chances and scored three goals, Chirwa stressed that managing the game was the priority in knockout football.
“In cup matches, it’s not always about scoring as many goals as possible. It’s about controlling the game and being efficient in key moments. We created good opportunities and made sure to stay patient throughout,” he said.
Chirwa also acknowledged Songwe Border United’s challenge, despite their relegation from the TNM Super League.
“They are organised, physical, and gave us a competitive game. Credit to the boys for staying focused and disciplined for the full 90 minutes,” he noted.
Looking ahead to the Round of 16, where Bullets will face Ndirande Stars at a venue to be confirmed, Chirwa said the team will continue to refine their approach.
“The next round will be tougher. We will keep improving our decision-making in the final third and maintain concentration. The focus is on getting a positive result,” he concluded.
