Munthali reacts to Chilobwe defeat: “We were below our best”

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Reserves head coach Heston Munthali has admitted his side fell short of expectations following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Chilobwe United in the ThumbsUp Southern Region Football League on Sunday morning.

After a goalless opening half at Kamuzu Stadium, Chilobwe found the breakthrough early in the second period through Sylvester Chimenya, handing Bullets Reserves their second loss of the campaign. The result leaves Munthali’s side second on the log with 27 points—three behind leaders Ekhaya Reserves, who still have a game in hand.

Speaking after the final whistle, Munthali did not hold back in his assessment of the team’s performance:

“Today we didn’t play our usual game. Nothing seemed to work for us. We created chances, but we simply failed to capitalize on them. Let’s accept that today was not our day. The boys didn’t play well, and we paid the price. Congratulations to Chilobwe for taking their opportunity.”

Bullets were coming off a 1-1 draw away to Chilomoni FC last weekend, and the head coach acknowledged the importance of bouncing back in the remaining first-round fixtures.

“Now our focus shifts to the games ahead. We must aim to finish strongly with victories, but we know it won’t be easy. We need to encourage the boys to stay focused and improve. Today, we were really below our best and wasted the chances we had in front of goal. But that’s football—it’s the nature of the game.”

With the race for top spot intensifying, Bullets Reserves will now regroup as they prepare for their next outing, determined to sharpen their finishing and return to winning ways to keep their title charge on track.
