FCB Nyasa Big Bullets players celebrate after taking the lead against MAFCO FC at Joyce Chitsulo Stadium in Mwanza

Report: Bullets 1-0 MAFCO

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over MAFCO FC in a historic encounter at Joyce Chitsulo Stadium in Mwanza on Sunday afternoon.

An early second-half own goal proved decisive as Maule marked their first-ever top-flight match in Mwanza with all three points.

The People’s Team dominated large spells of the contest and created the better chances, with the narrow margin reflecting a game they controlled for long periods.

Kalambo Leads First-Half Pressure

Gilbert Chirwa’s men started brightly and quickly imposed themselves on the game, with Clever Kalambo at the heart of Bullets’ attacking play.

Kalambo tested goalkeeper Benjamin Nsaku early with a powerful strike from distance before turning provider moments later, picking out Dastan Banda, whose effort was blocked inside the box.

On 26 minutes, Gumbo had a golden opportunity after being picked out by Mpokera’s cross, but he fired wide, while Dastan Banda also missed the target from close range a minute later.

Kalambo thought he had broken the deadlock on 28 minutes with a powerful header, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

Bullets continued to press, and on 33 minutes Phodo was denied from close range following a rebound, before Kalambo struck the crossbar from a set piece on 36 minutes.

Despite their dominance, Maule were unable to find the breakthrough before the break, with MAFCO offering little going forward and Nyasulu largely untested.

Own Goal Separates the Sides

Bullets made a change at the break, introducing Ephraim Kondowe in place of Dastan Banda.

The move proved decisive almost immediately as the hosts took the lead moments into the second half, when Vitumbiko Phiri turned the ball into his own net under pressure.

MAFCO responded with a triple substitution on 50 minutes, bringing on Kingsley Nkhonjera, Clifford Msowoya and Wakisa Kalinga in place of Vitumbiko Phiri, Blessings Mofolo and Walusungu Mpata.

They made a further change on 65 minutes, with Awalu Ali coming on.

The visitors showed more attacking intent after the restart, but Bullets remained in control and continued to manage the game effectively.

Game Management Secures the Points

On 52 minutes, Gumbo had an opportunity to create a clear opening for Bullets, but opted to square the ball to Kalambo instead of going for goal at the near post, with his pass cut out before the visitors cleared their lines.

Kondowe then had a chance to double the lead just before the hour mark after meeting Phodo’s cross, but his effort went wide.

Chirwa introduced George Chaomba and Yankho Singo on 76 minutes in place of Peter Banda and Phodo to maintain attacking energy, before later changes on 83 minutes saw Mologeni and Lungu replace Gumbo and Kalambo as Bullets managed the closing stages.

Kalambo, who had been a constant threat throughout, was forced off after picking up a knock.

MAFCO pushed late with a series of set pieces, but Bullets defended resolutely to preserve their lead.

The result sees Maule claim their first win of the campaign and move up to fourth place on four points after Matchweek 2.

They sit behind leaders Silver Strikers and second-placed Masters FC, who both have six points, while third-placed Civil Service United are also on four points.

The victory also marks a historic milestone as the first elite league match played at Joyce Chitsulo Stadium ends in a win for The People’s Team.
