Nyirenda: A coach must adapt to his players

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets head coach Wedson Nyirenda says adapting to the players at his disposal will be one of his first priorities, insisting that successful coaching begins with understanding the strengths of the squad.

Speaking during his unveiling press conference in Blantyre on Wednesday, Nyirenda outlined his approach to working with a squad assembled before his arrival, stressing that understanding the players must come before implementing any philosophy of play.

The Zambian tactician stressed that effective coaching is not only about implementing ideas, but also about adapting to the qualities of the players available.

“It is very difficult to integrate players into my philosophy of play, but the most important thing is for the coach to adapt to the players.

“First of all, I have to adapt to them, make them feel comfortable and make them feel happy to play.

“While that is happening, it will be possible to get positive results.”

Nyirenda believes building strong relationships within the squad will help create an environment where players can perform at their best.

Rather than rushing to impose changes, the former Zambia national team coach says he wants to learn more about the group and understand how best to maximise their potential.

He also believes the arrival of a new coach can provide an additional source of motivation for players eager to impress.

“There is also that self-motivation from the players when they see a new coach because they want to impress, and we also need to depend on that.”

The 59-year-old arrived in Malawi on Tuesday ahead of his unveiling as Bullets head coach in Blantyre the following day.

He officially began work on Thursday after receiving his Malawi work permit.

His first assignment in charge of The People’s Team will be Saturday’s Airtel Top 8 quarterfinal first leg against Ekhaya FC at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, with kick-off scheduled for 17:00.
