FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Reserves wrapped up the first round of the ThumbsUp Southern Region Football League with a goalless draw against Liberty FC at Kamuzu Stadium on Wednesday, a result that left head coach Heston Munthali both proud and frustrated.
The stalemate saw the young Bullets finish third on the table with 28 points from 15 matches.
“I think overall the boys played very well today. We dominated possession and created so many chances, but unfortunately we couldn’t utilize them,” Munthali said.
“In football, you can play good football, but if you don’t take your chances, it becomes difficult to win games.”
Despite the missed opportunities, the head coach was quick to commend his side’s work ethic and determination.
“I am happy with the fighting spirit and the intensity we showed. We kept pushing until the last whistle, and defensively we were solid because we didn’t allow Liberty to get many clear chances.”
This is Munthali’s first season in charge of the Reserves, and he is in the process of rebuilding the squad after losing several key players. Goalkeeper Austin Chirambo and defender Edward Thengo were promoted to the senior team, while defenders Happy Mphepo and Andrew Lameck, together with wing attacker Wongani Kaponya, moved to Ekhaya FC.
Reflecting on the bigger picture, Munthali said he was satisfied with the progress of his youthful squad in the opening half of the season.
“To finish third with 28 points is not a bad achievement considering we had a few tough games along the way. The boys are still learning, and these kinds of matches will help them grow,” he explained.
Looking ahead, the former Bullets striker stressed the need for composure in the final third if his side is to turn promise into victories.
“What we need to improve in the second round is our composure in front of goal and making sure we punish teams when we create openings.
“If we maintain our creativity but add sharpness in finishing, I have no doubt we’ll be strong contenders in the next round.”
