Following a 1-1 stalemate with Chilomoni FC, head coach Heston Munthali acknowledged areas his FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Reserves must improve as they continue their pursuit of the SRFA Thumbsup League title.
Munthali admitted his side struggled to impose their usual dominance, particularly in the first half, despite taking the lead through a Chimwemwe Banda own goal. The hosts leveled from a set piece in the second half, but the young Maule remain unbeaten and top of the table with 27 points, three clear of second-placed Ekhaya Reserve.
Coach Munthali’s Take on the Draw
“I believe it was a good game overall. In the first half, we didn’t play as well as we had planned. The pitch conditions and our execution were not at the level we expected. However, the second half showed some improvement, even though we still had a few areas where we could have done better,” Munthali said.
Reflecting on the equalizer, Munthali pointed to a lapse in organization:
“We managed to score in the first half, but unfortunately, we conceded from a free kick in the second half. I feel we could have defended that situation more effectively. Perhaps the boys weren’t fully organized in that moment, and Chilomoni punished us for it. We created chances but didn’t make the most of them, and at times, we were second to the ball. That’s football—sometimes it just doesn’t go your way. We accept the result and now focus on improving in training.”
Returning COSAFA Players a Boost
The coach was quick to highlight the importance of having key players Kondwani Tebulo and Misheck Billiat back from COSAFA duty with Malawi Under 20, noting that their presence adds depth and quality to the squad.
“The return of our players from COSAFA is a big boost because they are key members of the team. We gave them some rest today due to the number of games they’ve played, but we introduced them for a few minutes to start preparing them for the next matches. We missed them, but I must commend the boys who played today—they worked hard and helped us a lot. With everyone together, we are confident moving forward.”
Eyes on Consistency
With the first round of the Thumbsup League nearing its conclusion, Munthali emphasized the importance of consistency and focus:
“We know the remaining matches will not be easy, but we are approaching each game with focus and determination. The goal is to work hard, plan well, and keep our fighting spirit high so we can finish the first round strongly. Every game is important, and we will continue to give our best.”
The draw leaves Bullets Reserves firmly in control of the league standings, sitting at the top with 27 points as they look to finish the first round on a strong note.
