Blantyre derby loaded: Bullets to face Wanderers in Airtel Top 8 Final

Defending champions Nyasa Big Bullets will play Mighty Mukuru Wanderers in the final of this year’s Airtel Top 8 Cup after the rivals beat Blue Eagles on Sunday in the last semi-final match played at Kamuzu Stadium.

This will be the fourth Blantyre derby this season after the recent one which saw The People’s Team hammering the blue camp of the Blantyre City 4-0 in the semi-finals of FDH Bank Cup in October.

Bullets, who reached their third final in the competition, were 3-1 winners over two-time champions Silver Strikers on Saturday while the neighbours eliminated 2018 winners Blue Eagles 0-2 at Kamuzu Stadium on Sunday.

This will also be the first time for the two Blantyre giants to face-off in the final of the competition since it was launched in 2017.

Before the fifth edition, Bullets were the finalists in 2018 and 2020/21 seasons whilst Wanderers were finalists in 2017.

However, this will be the third time for the two teams to face each other in this Top 8 Cup, having met in the 2018 and 2020/21 semis in which Bullets won 2-1 and 4-1, respectively.

Out of the three meetings this season Bullets won two, with the other match ending in a 3-3 draw.

This will also be Kalisto Pasuwa’s men’s second cup final this year after they won the FDH Bank Cup with a 3-1 win over the their reserves.

The final match will be played at Bingu National Stadium on Saturday.

It will also mark the end of the 2022 football calendar in the Malawian top flight football which started in March this year as The People’s Team is hunting for a treble this season after lifting the FDH Bank Cup and defending the TNM Super League.
