FCB Nyasa Big Bullets is delighted to announce Mike Mkwate has signed a new contract to extend his commitment with the club.
Mkwate’s new one-and-a-half-year deal means the midfielder will remain at The People’s Team beyond the expiry of his previous deal, which was set to end in March.
The 26-year-old returned to Bullets in 2023 after leaving South African side Polokwane City, signing a two-year contract. He was however on a lengthy lay-off due to a devastating injury he suffered three months after his return.
Said Mkwate after signing the new deal:
“As a player, I’m delighted that Bullets has offered me a new contract to extend my stay at the club considering that I have been out for two years after suffering a long-term injury, and I thank God for this favour.
“Football being my career, it hasn’t been easy to be on the sidelines for two years. But I’m happy that I’m finally back. That [injury] was just a small setback in my career. I am confident that I am the same player, injury-free now, and I will resume preparations for the new season with the rest of the squad.
“Every player desires to achieve great things during their playing time and I want to encourage my teammates to continue working hard as individuals and as a team for us to return to winning trophies.”
Coach Peter Mponda said:
“[Mike Mkwate is] a very good player. I am excited to sign him. He is one of the best number 10s in the country, so it’s good to have Mike in the team. It’s very unfortunate that he was out of action for quite a long time because of an injury, not because he’s not a good player, not because of his attitude. His attitude is very positive, he works hard. Like I said earlier he is one of the best number 10s I’ve worked with.
“Signing him today is not about what he did in the past, but believing in him knowing that he is a good player, he can help the team. I didn’t hesitate, I didn’t think twice to say let’s give Mike a contract. He is a plus to the team, he can see a pass where these other players can’t see.
“Like I said, I worked with Mike before, I know his work ethic, he doesn’t have an attitude. He is a player who wants to be challenged, If you give him a challenge, he will give you what you want. I know how to handle him, that’s why I said I didn’t hesitate [to extend his contract]. Yes, he didn’t play the whole of last season because of injury, but I believe Bullets can get the best out of Mike.”
