Patrick Mwaungulu has been crowned the 2023 TNM Super League Player of the Season.
The midfielder becomes the fourth FCB Nyasa Big Bullets player to be recognised with the prestigious award for a fourth successive season.
Mwaungulu, who also won the Best Midfielder of the 2023 Season on the night, had an exceptional campaign in which he played a key role as The People’s Team won a fifth straight league championship.
The 21-year-old played 26 games and scored eight goals during a season in which he provided nine assists and earned four Man of the Match accolades.
Our reserves graduate, who joined Kalisto Pasuwa’s side in the 2022 season, in which he went on to win the Best Midfielder, came out top in the votes to win the ultimate prize in the just-ended spell ahead of his former teammate Chimwemwe Idana (now at Silver Strikers), new teammate Innocent Nyasulu (who recently joined us from Mighty Waka Waka Tigers, who won Goalkeeper of the Season on the night) and Dedza Dynamos forward Clement Nyondo.
“This award goes down to team work. We worked hard for this. We had several injuries and we had congested fixtures, but, we kept on pushing forward and got the results. I am very grateful to the management, my fellow players, technical panel and the fans for the support rendered to me in the just ended season,” he commented.
Mwaungulu scored three vital goals that surely won the fifth consecutive league title for Pasuwa’s men.
He scored the winning goal against Civil Service United when the game was at 2-2 and with less than ten minutes left to play, he released a thunderous shot that caught Tione Tembo napping in the line of duty. The goal was enough to collect all the points for his team.
The midfielder was at it again, this time around, scoring a stunning goal against Bangwe All Stars in the dying minutes of the match that was destined for a goalless draw. His long-range strike was too much for the visitors to stop.
He then scored the lone goal that won it for Bullets away to Karonga United to edge The People’s Team closer to the title.
And on the final day of the season, his strike earned a vital point that officially crowned Bullets the undisputed champions for the 17th time.
Mwaungulu joins Idana, Peter Banda and Gomegzani Chirwa, who won the prestigious award in the past three seasons, respectively.
Congratulations Patrick!
