Captain’s Call: Willard wants strong start in Chitipa

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets captain Frank Willard says it will be a proud and special moment to lead the team in their first-ever competitive match in Chitipa when they face Chilumba Barracks in the FDH Bank Cup Round of 32 on Sunday afternoon.

Speaking to Bullets Media in Chitipa after Friday’s morning training session, Willard shared the players’ determination to start the campaign strongly and aim for silverware.

“An honour to lead the team here”

“It’s a very special thing leading this team in our first-ever match here in Chitipa,” he said. “We are facing a team that we’ve never met before. We are not underestimating them, even though they play in the lower division, and everyone respects that it’s a crucial game for us.”

Learning from the Karonga draw

Reflecting on last weekend’s 3-3 TNM Super League draw against Karonga United, Willard admitted the result was painful but believes it can fuel a strong reaction in Sunday’s cup tie.

“It was a painful result giving away a 3-1 lead. It’s not something we anticipated, but that’s the result we got. We just have to accept it, move on and learn from it. We believe it’s great motivation for us to do better on Sunday.”

Eyeing the FDH Bank Cup

The skipper also stressed the team’s hunger to reclaim the trophy, having failed to defend it in 2024 after winning it as part of the quadruple in 2023.

“We failed to defend the FDH Bank Cup last year and as players we keep pushing and motivating each other to do better and retain it this season.”

“No excuses – focus is key”

Willard is pleased with the playing surface and conditions in Chitipa and says the focus is on executing the game plan.

“The pitch and the weather are all good, we can’t give any excuses. What’s important is for us to keep focused and keep encouraging each other to get a result and reach the next round.”

Calling on the Maule family

Willard urged supporters from Chitipa and beyond – including those from neighbouring Zambia and Tanzania – to paint the stadium red and white on Sunday.

He also addressed the negative reaction from a section of the crowd after the Karonga draw.

“It wasn’t a good reaction from the fans. It was unfortunate that they went on to smash the bus,” said Willard. “I believe that was one of the best games we’ve played this season despite the draw. No player wants to drop points – there’s a lot at stake, including pride, points and bonuses. We ask our supporters to stand with us even when results don’t go our way.”
