The 2024 FDH Bank Cup final between Blue Eagles and holders FCB Nyasa Big Bullets will be played at the magnificent Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on the first day of September.
The Football Association of Malawi, runners of cup competitions in the country, announced on Friday.
“We are thrilled to bring the FDH Bank Cup final back to BNS. We eagerly anticipate an electrifying final that will captivate live audiences, as well as those who will tune in on Television and Radio.
“In conjunction with sponsors FDH Bank PLC, we remain dedicated to providing fans with unforgettable experiences and creating lasting memories.
“The FDH Bank Cup remains a hallmark event in Malawian football, the tournament’s enduring spirit of David-versus-Goliath encounters has brought to life a level of football pride and comradery for both players and supporters as for the second time in the history of the competition we have a non-league side in the final,” said FAM Competitions and Communication Director, Gomezgani Zakazaka.
This marks the second time the iconic venue will host the ultimate match of the competition, following the memorable 2023 final as Bullets secured a 3-0 victory over Mafco FC to win the FDH Bank Cup for a second successive year.
Eyeing a third FDH Bank Cup, The People’s Team will be playing their fifth cup final match at the venue, the first being the Carlsberg Cup against Mighty Mukuru Wanderers in 2017 when we won 5-4 on penalties.
In 2018, Bullets conceded a controversial late penalty kick to lose 1-0 to Sunday’s opponents in the final of the Airtel Top 8, before we lost 5-3 on penalties to Mighty Mukuru Wanderers in the same competition four seasons later.
Last season, Kalisto Pasuwa’s men won two cups at the BNS, beating Mafco 3-0 in the FDH Bank Cup and Silver Strikers 4-2 on penalties to win the inaugural Castel Challenge Cup.
Bullets will be hoping to create more memories at the venue on Sunday.
The People’s Team started the 2024 FDH Bank Cup campaign at the Kamuzu Stadium where we recorded a 5-0 beating of Bangwe All Stars in the round-of-32, before dumping Wanderers out of the competition with a 2-1 triumph at the same venue.
Civil Service United paid us a visit in the quarterfinals and Precious Phiri’s 95th minute was all Pasuwa’s men needed to win 1-0 and reach the semis where we met Moyale Barracks at the BNS to book a place in the final with a 3-1 victory on Wednesday night.
