Bullets Women ready to fire as new season starts this weekend

After a lengthy off-season, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Women will begin their 2024 Goshen-FAM Women’s Regional League campaign this Saturday.

Maggie Chombo’s ladies will open their season with a home match against Mighty Waka Waka Tigers Women.

The competition, run by the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), has expanded this year to include ten teams vying for the Southern Region crown, up from eight teams previously.

According to the Southern Region Women’s Football Association (SRWFA), the 2024 season will be played from 20 July to 15 September.

In May, our women’s team faced an early exit from the Goshen-FAM Women’s National Championship after a 4-1 defeat to MDF Lioness.

Going into the new season, Bullets will aim to reclaim their glory after they finished last campaign as runners-up in the Southern Region League with 37 points, just two points behind the champions, Ntopwa Women.

The new term offers a significant opportunity for fresh talent to shine for Bullets ladies after we parted ways with several star players last season, including Mary Chavinda, Emily Jossam and Vanessa Chikupira.

In the initial five weeks of the new season, the team will encounter matches against 11 Stars, Fomo FC, Ndirande FC, and Bvumbwe FC.

Speaking to club media before they start their 2024 campaign, Chombo expressed excitement.

“We have been training for competitive matches and it’s exciting to hear that what we’ve been preparing for is finally here”, the former Malawi international said.

The coach has also shared how the team has been preparing for the new season following their early exit from the National Championship.

“After losing in the National Phase, we returned to training and corrected our mistakes. As of now I am satisfied with how the girls responded to training, there’s a great improvement in our players, which is so promising and I hope we will have a good season”.

Bullets will start the new campaign with several players out due to injuries, among them Malawi defender Bernadetta Mkandawire, but Chombo is determined that this will not affect the team.

She has since called on supporters to come out in large numbers to support the girls during matches.

“I am calling our supporters to come out and watch the new team we have built,” she invited Maule. “With this new team, we will try our best to produce good results for our supporters, we know the importance of collecting maximum points in all matches to get back our championship.

“We are hungry for the championship as last year we didn’t win anything, and I know for sure we will be facing teams who are also hungry for the league, so we don’t expect easy matches”.
